Kenya Innovation Week 2023: Jasiri/Wavumbuzi’s pivotal role in fostering entrepreneurial ecosystem maturity

The Kenya Innovation Week 2023, Commonwealth Edition, held at the Edge Convention Centre from November 27 to December 1, marked a pivotal moment in advancing innovation across the Commonwealth. This year’s theme, ‘Innovating to Unlock Our Common Wealth,’ brought together a diverse assembly of leaders, officials, business figures, young innovators, and academics from various Commonwealth nations. Among the key contributors to this prestigious event was Jasiri and Wavumbuzi, taking the lead in driving substantial ecosystem contributions.

The Commonwealth Edition of Kenya Innovation Week was characterized by a spirit of collaboration and synergy among Commonwealth member countries. The event explored the Commonwealth innovation system, its key stakeholders, growth potential, challenges, and opportunities for innovators. His Excellency President William Ruto inaugurated the event and launched Kenya’s ambitious 10-year Innovation Masterplan, underlining the nation’s commitment to advancing innovation, which aligns with Jasiri/Wavumbuzi’s goal of fostering a mature and innovative entrepreneurial ecosystem. Kenya’s 10-year Innovation Masterplan, launched during KIW, signifies the nation’s commitment to advancing innovation. This strategic plan aligns with the Commonwealth Edition’s theme of ‘Innovating to Unlock Our Common Wealth,’ emphasizing innovation’s role in achieving sustainable development.

In her keynote address, Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, emphasized the pivotal role of innovation in propelling nations forward in a rapidly evolving technological era. “Kenya Innovation Week is so special because it is a unique opportunity to combine the Commonwealth’s capabilities and pool our power. In the spirit of partnership which is fit for our age, together we can push the boundaries of what is possible, and step closer to the future we dream of: a secure future, a resilient future, an exciting future,” said Secretary-General Scotland. The collaborative spirit demonstrated during the Commonwealth Edition aligns with Jasiri/Wavumbuzi’s mission to drive innovation and change, thereby contributing to the maturity of entrepreneurial ecosystems.

During the opening session of Kenya Innovation Week, Dr. Roselyn Marandu-Kareithi, Jasiri and Wavumbuzi Kenya Country Lead, took the stage to share insights into what it takes for an entrepreneurial ecosystem to mature. In her powerful address, she emphasized the critical role of innovation and collaboration in this journey.

“Wavumbuzi is about fostering innovation, creating awareness, and driving change. We firmly believe that for the ecosystem to mature, it requires a collective effort,” remarked Dr. Marandu-Kareithi. She further outlined the achievements of the Wavumbuzi program, showcasing how it has been instrumental in raising awareness about innovation’s transformative power and contributing to the maturity and resilience of the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Wavumbuzi has been instrumental in fostering innovation and driving change in the entrepreneurial ecosystem especially among young learners. Its achievements in creating awareness and promoting innovation have been seen as crucial steps toward ecosystem maturity. 

A noteworthy moment during Kenya Innovation Week was the recognition of Wavumbuzi by the Ministry of Education. Top officials acknowledged Wavumbuzi as one of their key partners, highlighting its pivotal role in driving innovation and entrepreneurship among the youth. This recognition reinforced the importance of collaboration between government bodies and initiatives like Wavumbuzi to harness innovation’s potential, ultimately contributing to the maturation of the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

KIW provided a platform for honoring individuals and initiatives that have made outstanding contributions to the entrepreneurial ecosystem. This recognition emphasized the importance of nurturing innovative ideas and initiatives. One of the standout events of Kenya Innovation Week was the Wavumbuzi Awards Ceremony, which included the presentation of the Quest and Mentorship programs. This segment celebrated innovation by recognizing individuals and initiatives that have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the ecosystem. It was a moment to honor those who have turned challenges into opportunities and are leaving their mark in the entrepreneurial landscape, further nurturing a culture of innovation and propelling the ecosystem towards maturity.

As part of Oscars Olympiads, a session by Jasiri and StartUp Africa, Kenya Innovation Week featured an interactive session titled ‘Cultivate Your Creative Edge: Unleashing the Entrepreneurial Mindset.’ This session went beyond a typical panel discussion; it served as an incubation hub for innovative ideas. Attendees engaged in hands-on activities and delved into thought-provoking case studies. The aim was clear – to ignite entrepreneurial spirits and equip aspiring leaders with the tools to thrive in a fast-paced business world, thereby strengthening the entrepreneurial ecosystem’s maturity. 

The Oscars Olympiads session at KIW went beyond discussions; it incubated innovative ideas and inspired participants to harness creativity and adaptability in the fast-paced business world. It showcased the role of Jasiri/Wavumbuzi in fostering an entrepreneurial mindset.

Jasiri also hosted a networking session during Kenya Innovation Week, focusing on “How to build and grow an African start-up to compete globally.” The objective was to empower Jasiri Fellows with insights for building globally competitive startups, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and growth. Through dynamic presentations and structured speed networking, this session fostered meaningful connections among entrepreneurs, investors, and support organizations, nurturing a collaborative ecosystem.

The overarching goal was to inspire, inform, and create opportunities for sustainable and globally impactful growth within the African startup landscape, contributing to the maturation of the entrepreneurial ecosystem. The session emphasized the balance between sustainability and growth, highlighting Jasiri’s role in creating opportunities for sustainable and globally impactful growth.

As part of the Kenya Innovation Week Event, awards were presented to the winners of the Jasiri Growth Accelerator program. This recognition underscored the importance of fostering innovation and growth within the entrepreneurial ecosystem, contributing to its maturity and sustainability. The event celebrated the accomplishments of startups that have shown remarkable progress and potential for global competitiveness. Recognizing innovators across the Commonwealth

The Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Innovation for Sustainable Development Awards 2023 was a highlight of the event. President William Ruto and Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland KC awarded 15 exceptional innovators from Commonwealth countries for their outstanding contributions towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These awards celebrated innovators across the five pillars of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership. Beyond recognition, the event offered ongoing support and opportunities for global participation to these groundbreaking innovators, further emphasizing the role of innovation in addressing global challenges and maturing entrepreneurial ecosystems.
